The Plymouth Badminton League’s Restricted Badminton Tournament saw 46 players representing 10 clubs enter the 8 events held at the Mayflower Centre on Sunday 18th March. Restricted means that no player from Division One can enter and, even then, the Tournament is sub-divided for players from Divisions 2 and 3 and from Divisions 4 and 5.
Phillip and Abigail Ellis who play for Mayflower Wednesday in Division 3 entered all events. Phillip was successful in the Men’s Singles beating fellow club mate Jamie Harper 13-15 15-5 15-3. Abigail was successful in the Ladies Singles beating Melanie Francis from Y.M.C.A. Kitto 11-6 11-2. Phillip and Jamie teamed up to win the Men’s Doubles 2/3 beating Gary Johnson (Salisbury / Armada) and Jon Judge (Tamarside) who unfortunately pulled a muscle and had to concede in the first game.
The Ladies Doubles for Division 4/5 saw Frances Ward and Heather Cooper (B.A.T.S.) beat Melanie Francis and Waine Parker (Y.M.C.A. Kitto) 15-9 15-13.
In the Men’s Doubles 4/5 Bob Pomeroy (China Fleet) and Colin Rowlands (Callington) beat Alan Berry and David Harrington (B.A.T.S.) 15-9 15-13.
In the Ladies Double’s 2/3 Sue Gale and Nancy O’Connor (Tamarside) beat Kate Triscott and Barbara Woods (Builders) 15-0 15-9. Nancy then partnered Gary Johnson (a stand-in for the injured Jon Judge) to win the Mixed Doubles 2/3 beating Nikki Gabb and Julian Cooper (Tavistock) 15-10 15-6.
