Press Release 27th March 2008

Greenbank March On

The Greenbank Bandwagon rolls on to it’s twentieth consecutive Championship Title in the Plymouth and District Badminton League.

Greenbank still had to show some fighting spirit in beating Division One Runner’s Up Ivybridge 9-0 at Whiteford Road.  The usual battle between Matt Hemsley and Dan Corby proved to be a thrilling encounter taking the first and second Men’s Events to a third end but Matt, ably supported by Andy Ward and Paul Ackrell came out on top.  The first Mixed carried on the encounter but Matt with Lynne Hunt just pipped Dan with Liz Marker 21-16 20-22 22-20.  Greenbank completed their season beating Callington 9-0.  Callington completed their season losing 9-0 at Greenbank B and 5-4 at University.

Devonshire have the edge in Division Two with one match left to play. At Kitto, Devonshire became the first victors there this season winning 6-3 and now in the return match Devonshire need just three points to secure the Title.  Devonshire had previously beaten Tavistock 9-0 at Horrabridge.
Derriford will finish in third place in this Division beating B.A.T.S. 6-3 at Bere Alston and Mayflower Wednesday 7-2 at Devonport High School for Boys.  This defeat sends the Wednesday down to Division Three.

A late surge has given Callington B the Division Three Title, they beat Torpoint 9-0 at the Sports Centre and then in a tight encounter at Y.M.C.A. Kitto B where five matches needed a third end the Visitors showed their superiority winning the match 7-2.  Builders will finish as Runner’s Up in this Division beating Callington C 5-4 at the Sports Centre.
In their next match Callington C came back to beat University 5-4 at Devonport High School for Boys.  B.A.T.S.  B have yet again failed to win a match in their second season but have always given 100% and shown great sportsmanship.  Their time will come.

In the Men’s Division A University beat Victoria 10-2 at Devonport High School for Boys and 8-4 at Whiteford Road to finish as Runner’s Up to Greenbank.  Victoria, in beating Y.M.C.A. Kitto 7-5 at the Kitto Centre will finish third in this Division whilst Kitto will be relegated to Division B.

In the Men’s Division B Victoria B beat Devonshire A 9-3 to finish as Runner’s Up to University B.

Y.M.C.A. Kitto B  have dominated Men’s Division C all season.  They beat University 11-1 and Torpoint 12-0 to win the Division and remain unbeaten.  Y.M.C.A. Kitto’s C team have played equally as well and in beating Torpoint 11-1 have finished as Runner’s Up.  Mayflower Wednesday beat University 12-0.

Torpoint’s first season in the Ladies Division has brought no rewards.  They lost 11-1 to Y.M.C.A. Kitto and 9-3 to Devonshire but as a Division Three Club playing against senior opposition have done very well.
