Press Release 19th January 2008
The second round of the Beckly Cup competition saw Torpoint once again beat senior opposition without the handicap. After beating Mayflower Wednesday in Round One, Torpoint were drawn at home to Derriford, currently third in Division Two, but on the night short of three first team players. Torpoint took full advantage to win eleven of the eighteen ends to beat Derriford by one ace in even play and then to find they were given +108 handicap points to win the match by 109 aces.
Tavistock from Division Two entertained Callington from Division One, won two ends from their senior opponents but scored well in the match and with a handicap of +108 beat Callington by four aces.
Greenbank versus Ivybridge was an all Division One affair and a ding dong battle. Dan Corby playing for Ivybridge lifts Plymouth Badminton to another level and was great to watch, but again Ivybridge were two players short of their first team, were given +63 handicap but lost to Greenbank by fourteen aces.
The semi-finals draw will see Torpoint at home to Tavistock and Greenbank at home to Builders. Matches to be played in the week commencing February 11th.
In the Medley League Division One, Greenbank A remain unbeaten after seeing-off their B Team 7-2. The A Team did not have it all their own way with four events needing a third end. The B side’s Gareth Pearse was involved in both of the B side’s victories.
Y.M.C.A. Kitto are keeping pace with the leaders in Division Two helped by a 9-0 win at B.A.T.S. and the end of season clashes with Devonshire will have an interesting outcome.
In Division Three it seems the Callington sides have had a busy month. The C Team took on the B Team in December, took all three Men’s Events to a third end but alas ended up losing 9-0. In the return match in January the C side went one better winning the first Mixed Event when Peter Regan and Luise Ryan beat Dave Bartholomew and Katherine Collard 22-20 21-16. The B Team ran out 8-1 winners.
At Torpoint, Callington C put up quite a fight before losing 5-4. Torpoint’s Joe Trethewey and Dan Thrift were unbeaten on the night as was the Visitor’s Viv Henley. Callington B won 7-2 at University in November but a late score sheet will see the home side deducted two points.
With one match to play Greenbank have all but wrapped up the Men’s Division A Title, two excellent matches saw Greenbank beat Victoria 9-3 and University 8-4.
In the Men’s Division B, Devonshire B are still looking for that elusive first win. They lost to their A Side and Victoria B, both 9-3.
Y.M.C.A. Kitto B beat their C Team 10-2 to remain unbeaten at the top of Men’s Division C.
