Press Release 7th April 2008
Plymouth Badminton’s “Open” Tournament once again proved to be a spectacle for badminton in the area. With not such a big entry, perhaps too close to the Easter break, there was a fine display put on at the Kitto Centre.
With only five entered in the Men’s Singles University’s Peter Gibbons won his group and went on to beat B.A.T.S. David Harrington 21-17 21-15 in the Final.
Likewise in the Ladies Singles with only four entries University’s Rachel Iveson won her group and took the Title beating B.A.T.S. Frances Ward 21-17 12-21 21-18.
Peter Gibbons came into the frame once again in the Men’s Doubles. Playing with Greenbank’s Andy Ward, they won their group and in the Final came up against Callington’s Henry Sherwood and Shane Maton who incidentally finished bottom of their group, but we had a cracking Final which Henry and Shane perhaps should have taken, but it is points that count and with “no setting” Peter and Andy took the Title 21-14 20-21 21-20.
With Seven pairs in the Ladies Doubles Greenbank’s Lynne Hunt and Sharon Bates retained their crown beating University’s Rachel Iveson and Pia Gretton-Ost 21-13 21-11.
An all Greenbank Final in the Mixed Doubles saw Andy Ward and Sharon Bates beat Gareth Pearse and Kirsty Brewer 21-15 18-21 21-12.
