Press Release 13th November 2007
Mayflower Wednesday introduced Jasmine Pearse to League Badminton last season at Division Three level. This season, in Division Two of the Plymouth Badminton League and up against an experienced Tavistock side, Jasmine with her Mixed partner Mark Hawker found herself playing the third Mixed Event with the score at 4-4. Keeping a cool head, Mark and Jasmine beat their opponents Mark Bullock and Gill Northey 21-19 21-13 to give her team a 5-4 victory.
Earlier Mayflower Wednesday had entertained Y.M.C.A. Kitto where three of the events went to a third end, and the younger fitter Kitto side prevailed in all of them. It was left to Wednesday’s Sue Gale and Jane Bryan to save the whitewash as they won the first Ladies event against Waine Parker and Emma Scott 21-11 21-10 in Wednesday’s 8-1 defeat.
In Division Three the newly formed Callington C side are finding points hard to come across. At the Kitto Centre, where it is always hard to find points, they lost 9-0 in straight sets. In this match Jane Oxlade had a good initiation into League Badminton for the home side.
In their next match at home to University Callington fared a little better taking three events to a third end before losing the match 6-3. Finally at Builders the young ‘Cally’ side found themselves outgunned losing 9-0.
In the same Division Callington B came out on top at Torpoint winning 8-1. The result belies the competition through the evening where four events went to a third end and Torpoint scored 400 aces to their visitors 420. The husband and wife partnership in the third Mixed saved the ‘brush’ when Laurie and Lesley Thrift beat James Payne and Corrina Garbutt 21-8 21-13.
A close encounter in the Men’s Division A saw Y.M.C.A. Kitto take advantage of their home court to beat Salisbury Armada 8-4.
Mixed fortunes for B.A.T.S. in the Men’s Division B. They went down 10-2 at home to University B in a close encounter. B.A.T.S. introduced another youngster in James David and looks like a player for the future. A different story at Devonshire where B.A.T.S. came away 7-5 winners, a victory marred by an injury to Alan Berry after an epic first end score of 28-26, the highest yet this season.
In the Men’s Division C the first inter-club match saw Y.M.C.A. Kitto B beat their C team 9-3.
Greenbank are off to a ‘flyer’ in the Ladies Division beating Torpoint 12-0 at Whiteford Road, followed by an 11-1 win at University where Kit Sukcharoen and Louise Mulligan took an end off Margaret Banyard and Christine Shannon 23-21.
Finally Greenbank beat Y.M.C.A. Kitto 10-2 at Whiteford Road to set a hot pace in this Division.
