Plymouth & District Badminton League

Press Release 14th December 2007

Builders set the Pace

Builders have set a hot pace for the rest to follow to lead Division Three in the Plymouth Badminton League.  They showed no mercy to their young visitors, B.A.T.S., winning 9-0 in straight sets.  Builders did not have it quite their own way at Y.M.C.A. Kitto losing out 5-4 but in the return match Builders took sweet revenge winning 7-2 at Whiteford Road .  At Torpoint, Builders dominated the Ladies events and eventually the Mixed events but found their match in Torpoint’s Laurie Thrift who with Joe Trethewey and his son Dan won the second and third Men’s respectively to rescue two points in Torpoint’s 7-2 defeat.

A match report that reads “age and experience with youth and exuberance made for entertaining badminton” sums up the match at Callington where the Home side’s C team beat B.A.T.S. B by 7-2.  This result gives B.A.T.S. their first points in three matches and came when Frankie Morton and Heather Cooper beat Donna Weeks and Corrinna Gorbett 21-14 21-12 in the Third Ladies, and when Chris Carter and Colette David beat James Payne and Corrinna 22-20 21-18 in the Third Mixed.

An entertaining evening in the Men’s Division B saw B.A.T.S. beat Devonshire B 7-5. The Home side’s Man of the Match was given to James David who on only his second League match played well and with Jonathon Freeman took an end off Rob Cornew and John Martin 23-21.

A double success for Devonshire ’s A side saw them win 8-4 at University and then beat Victoria B 7-5 at the Leisure Centre.

Y.M.C.A. Kitto B lead the Men’s Division C helped by a 7-5 victory over Visitors, Mayflower Wednesday.

Torpoint’s first match in this Division saw them off to a good start winning the first end in the first two events but disaster struck as that was their lot running out 10-2 losers to Y.M.C.A. Kitto C.

In the Ladies Division Greenbank are leaving the rest of the pack behind winning their fifth match in a row and just dropping two ends on the way.  Their latest victims were University who they beat 12-0 at Whiteford Road .  University then fought out an even match at home to Devonshire where the result was a 6-6 draw.

Y.M.C.A. Kitto seem to be the only side that could dent Greenbank’s armour they beat Devonshire 10-2 at the Kitto Centre to hold second place in this Division.

In the Medley League Division One Ivybridge are taking advantage of their top flight survival in beating University 6-3 at the South Devon Leisure Centre this victory gives Ivybridge their second win in the three outings.

The first inter-club match at Greenbank saw reserves brought into both sides - Chris Hunt and Dylys Bradshaw into the A Team and Daniel Pring and Christine Shannon into the B Team.  It made for an interesting match where the A Team won 9-0.
