The End of Season "Open" Tournament saw thirty-four players enter the five disciplines, representing nine clubs from the Plymouth Badminton League. A full day at the Kitto Centre saw a feast of badminton played on five courts.
The Men’s Singles which had eleven entries saw an all University Final where Liam Clements beat clubmate Peter Gibbons 15-3 15-12.
The Ladies Singles which had five entrants saw Greenbank’s Lynne Hunt beat University’s Rachel Iveson 11-7 11-4.
Lynne was successful again in the Ladies Doubles Final with fellow Greenbank player Sharon Bates. They beat Callington’s Lorna Garbett and B.A.T.S. Tamsin Woodroffe 15-3 15-7 to retain their Ladies Doubles Crown.
University returned to centre stage in the Men’s Doubles where nine pairs fought out a terrific battle, but in the Final youth prevailed when University’s Luke Green and Ian Honeyman outran Greenbank’s Paul Haley and Paul Ackrell 15-9 12-15 15-1
The Mixed Doubles saw twelve pairs fight for a place in the Final but eventually Greenbank’s Andy Ward and Sharon Bates beat Callington’s James Cooper and Judith Farris 15-2 15-9.
The Beckly Cup semi-finals saw University keep Torpoint (+216) at bay and win by 14 aces whilst at Callington the home side played well to beat Salisbury Armada (+162) by 22 aces.
University have been drawn as the home team in the all Division One Final against Callington, the match being played at the Council Chamber in Torpoint.
In the Medley Division One the Greenbank A bandwagon rolls on winning 6-3 at Callington. The home side won one event in each section.
A close encounter in Division Two saw Derriford beat Salisbury Armada 5-4. A nail-biting finish in the final event saw Neil Griffiths and Marilyn Allen beat Roger Stevens and Pam Craig 15-8 10-15 15-11 to clinch the victory. Only one ace separated the final totals.
Y.M.C.A. Kitto A beat B.A.T.S. 9-0 to finish as Runners Up in this Division.
In Division Three, Mayflower Wednesday made the trip to Torpoint worthwhile winning 5-4 and ending the season as Runners-Up.
The B.A.T.S. B team finished their debut season losing 8-1 at Y.M.C.A. Kitto B. Berry’s Babes have won a lot of acclaim from their opponents for their determination.
In the Men’s Division A Greenbank beat their hosts Devonshire A 9-3, whilst in Division B Callington finished their season losing 8-4 at Mayflower Wednesday.
In the Ladies Division, University are finishing at a low tempo losing 12-0 at home to Salisbury Armada and by the same score at Devonshire A
