Press Release 16th February 2007
With seven weeks still to go before the end of the Badminton Season, Greenbank A have secured the Championship Title of the Plymouth Badminton League. With a 9-0 win at Ivybridge, Greenbank cannot be caught and still have two matches to play. This is now nineteen years in succession that Greenbank have won the Championship and have remained undefeated for the last twelve years.
Greenbank’s B Team are not so fortunate, losing 7-2 at home to University. The students came on strong winning all three Men’s events and all three Mixed. Kirsty Brewer was involved with both the home side’s points.
In Division Two Callington secured their first win of the season at Derriford beating their hosts 5-4. A young lad on his way up is Henry Sherwood who remained undefeated for the visitors. In their next match Derriford lost by the same score at B.A.T.S.
Gary Marker’s return to the Tavistock side brought Tavy their first win since mid-November, beating B.A.T.S. 6-3. Gary won his third Men’s event with Mark Bullock and his first Mixed with Lynn McFarlane.
Devonshire are "strolling" to the Division Two Title. At the Leisure Centre Devonshire beat Tavistock 9-0 in straight sets.
In Division Three, it is "all to play for" but can anyone keep up with Devonshire’s B side?
The best challenge could come from Y.M.C.A. Kitto B but they have just gone to Mayflower Wednesday and lost 7-2. Wednesday have introduced David and Sue Gale into their side and given the team a new "bight".
University are bringing their season to a successful end beating Torpoint 5-4 at the Torpoint and Rame Sports Hall and then entertaining and beating Builders 6-3.
Y.M.C.A. Kitto A are holding all the "aces" in Men’s Division B. Undefeated after six matches including an 8-4 win at Callington and a 10-2 win at Devonshire.
Victoria are close on Kitto’s heels. They drew 6-6 at Mayflower Wednesday and won 10-2 at Callington.
In the Men’s Division C, University with a massive 12-0 win at nearest rivals Y.M.C.A. Kitto B have virtually assured themselves of the Title.
The Y.M.C.A. recovered some composure to draw 6-6 at Tavistock in a well balanced match with only 10 aces separating the final totals.
Builders found their "form" to win their first match of the season. They were at home to Y.M.C.A. Kitto C whom they beat 10-2. Ben Bryan was involved in both of the visitor’s points.
The front runners in the Ladies Division saw Devonshire A win 12-0 at Salisbury/Armada whilst Y.M.C.A. Kitto went to Devonshire B and won by the same score.
Y.M.C.A. Kitto verses Devonshire A in the final match of the season should be an interesting confrontation.
