Press Release March 15th 2005
Last season’s losing finalist became this season’s winners as Torpoint beat University in the final of the Plymouth Badminton League’s Beckly Cup Competition.
Torpoint had seen off Mayflower Wednesday in the semi-final by 12 aces whilst University put paid to Greenbank by 39 aces. University with nine wins out of ten in Division Three knew the handicap would be against them and it showed in their play. Torpoint from the same Division, but will be relegated, took three events off their senior opponents and scored enough aces to add to their +144 handicap to win by 39 aces.
In Division One, Greenbank ‘A’ secured their seventeenth consecutive championship seeing off their closest rivals Devonshire ‘A’ 6-3 at the Leisure Centre, and Devonshire ‘B’ 9-0 at Whiteford Road.
Greenbank ‘B’ will finish in third place, beating both Ivybridge and Devonshire ‘B’ 9-0. Devonshire ‘B’ without a win in this Division will be relegated.
B.A.T.S. have won promotion from Division Two beating Tavistock and Greenbank ‘C’ 7-2 but lost their unbeaten run at Greenbank 5-4. Greenbank ‘C’ will finish as runners-up to B.A.T.S.
Builders late run-in saw them lose 5-4 at Tavistock, beat Callington 7-2 and beat Greenbank 5-4 to finish in third place.
With an 8-1 win at Torpoint, Derriford have won the Division Three Title but have one unfinished match to complete to finalise the title.
Salisbury/Armada should finish as runners-up by virtue of a 5-4 win at Mayflower Wednesday. Torpoint will be relegated due to a 9-0 defeat at Y.M.C.A. Kitto and by 8-1 at Mayflower Wednesday. Torpoint did claim a little bit of grace in beating Mayflower Wednesday 6-3 at Torpoint.
Devonshire ‘D’s long wait at the top of Division Four has ended in disappointment. Tavistock ‘B’ beat University ‘B’ 9-0 on both occasions to overhaul Devonshire ‘D’ by one point. University ‘B’ have however conceded more than twelve events and all their results will be declared null and void. Never-the-less, Tavistock ‘B’ will still win the Division by one point.
In the Men’s Division ‘A’ the Title was won with the final match of the season, when Victoria entertained University knowing they could only drop one event to maintain the League title. The first event went to 1-1 so the rest of the evening proved to be a nail-biting event until Victoria achieved their 11-1 victory and the Men’s ‘A’ Title.
Devonshire won the Men’s ‘B’ Title with University ‘B’ as runners-up.
