BATS turn the tables on Devonshire

BAT’s A team started the second half of the Plymouth and District Badminton season with a match against Devonshire. BAT’s had opened the season with a match against Devonshire and were determined to get their revenge over losing the first encounter.

In the men’s doubles rubber David Harrington and Alan Berry started off well enough by taking the first game 15–5. They then went to sleep and lost the second game 2–15 but then regained their form to take the third game and the rubber 15–6. The second men’s doubles rubber saw David Harrington and Mike Ward play well together to take the second rubber 15–9 15–7. The third men’s doubles rubber saw Alan Berry and Mike ward unable to continue the good start when they lost the rubber 8–15 10–15.

In the ladies doubles rubbers the BAT’s ladies were all conquering with all three rubbers going their way without the Devonshire ladies getting into double figures. The first rubber saw Susie Povey and Frances Ward comfortably win 15–7 15–6. The second rubber saw Susie Povey and Lizzie Rae win easily 15–5 15–0. The third rubber saw Frances Ward and Lizzie Rae again win easily 15–6 15–4.

With the mixed doubles still to play BAT’s knew they had won the match but wanted to gain as many rubbers as possible to keep the pressure up on the team at the top of the division. The first mixed doubles rubber saw David Harrington and Susie Povey gradually wear down the Devonshire pair to take the rubber in two games 15–12 15–10. The second mixed doubles rubber saw Alan Berry and Frances Ward share the first few points but at 3–5 down they put together a run of 27 unanswered points to take the rubber 15–5 15–0. The third mixed doubles rubber was the only one that BAT’s lost but the Devonshire pair had to work hard to take the rubber 7–15 5–15.

At the end of the evening BAT’s A team were pleased to have started the second half of the season with a comprehensive 7–2 win over Devonshire.
